The final block of training

Posted by fenner on July 10, 2008

Well time has just flown by since arriving in Canmore, this town and the surrounding mountains have provided the perfect environment to train and prepair for the World 24 Hour Solo Champs. After the Canada Cup race at the weekend I have entered my final volume block before I start my taper for the Worlds. I did 2 great days riding too and from a fantastic and remote mountain resort called Nipika on the road to Radium Hot Springs. That clocked a solid 320 km’sand I managed to average 36km/h for the return journey with2 x solid SST type intervals thrown in for good measure. I was feeling super strong on the way back and with my CTL now approaching 135TSS/Day I am able to manage the load very well indeed;o)

Yesterday while doing a photo shoot for the local paper I spotted the familiar colours of the Flight Centre Team and quickly rode over to chat with Tim and Jo Bennett from Perth. After catching up with the results of the BC bike Race we managed a couple of hours riding the Canada Cup course and a session on the Highline, this was followed by a great swim in the lake and goodbyes as the guys headed back on the long journey to Vancouver. It was great to catch up withsome Aussies and what a great couple, I should add that bothfinished right up there in the BC Bike Race withTim and Adrian Jackson 3rd overall in the elite race and Jo finishing 5th in the mixed category, well done guys super effort.

I start an epic MTBride on Monday with a traverse from Canmore top Nelson in Bc. It should be an epic 3 day ride of around 350 km’s all offroad and withfood stashes being left for us on route. I am compleingthe trip with Big Brian (the konahard man) and bloody good bloke along with Steve Gaffrey. We will have MTB Powertaps with us so it will provide some very interesting data to look at on my return. Oh by the way I forgot to mention that I have a MTB Powertap on its way:o) I am frothing at being able to really quantify te exact demands of MTB riding. Look out for some studies in the not too distant future looking into the ultra endurance world.

Cheers all and I will see some of you very soon
