Smashed by Arbovirus!!

Posted by fenner on February 24, 2010

What a shocker, after feeling a little under par since returning from Wildside and with power numbers around 50 watts below what I would expect i decided to go and visit the doctor. It looks like either while I was in Cairns just before xmas or while I was in Tassie I got bitten by a mossie that infected me with the Arbovirus. Arbovirus or Ross River, Barmah Virus is a little untreatable nasty that in my case has destroyed my ability to make new red and white blood cells. This has left me anaemic and unable to make any more cells to get better, my white cell count is also super low and so I am fully open to catch just about everything going at the moment. All in all completely RUBBISH and I feel like a bag of poo. I am awaiting more test results, but, it looks like there will be no racing or even training for a few months. I am just trying to eat well and get as good a recovery as possible to get back into it and get ready for the Worlds later in the year.

Catch you not on the trail, but, maybe at the side of it :o(

Other recent news and FTP Training riders have continued to dominate across all areas and disciplines in early 2010, Ben Henderson narrowly missed out on winning the last round of the National MTB series at Shepparton and paced his race perfectly to get within a bike length of winning. Josh Carlson backed up with another top 10 result to keep him well up in the series. Bec Henderson also pulled out a great performance and I am sure there is lots more to come from these guys with Olympic selections starting to be considered for 2012. Over at Wildside Team Total Rush took out the Elite Teams trophy with Josh taking a stage win and consistent finishes in and around the top 10 for Fenz and Josh through the week. FTP rider James Williamson also showed great form, Willo is definitely getting some speed back in those legs. The battle raged between Total Rush owner Simon Coffin and Tim Chad through the week with just 1 second separating the two going into the final stage at Hells Gate. With Simon riding the new and super fast Specialized 29’er and the stage a flat speed fest across the sand it was always going to be a tough call for Tim and Simon came out the eventual winner. Last weekend saw John Blanko Blankenstein take Jason English to the wire at the Jet Black 24 in Sydney, reports have John smashing the climbs and looking strong throughout the event, great work for a guy who only started riding a year ago!
