National MTB Champs Round 1 2010

Posted by fenner on November 21, 2010

What a weekend of racing for the www.ftptraining.com crew this weekend at the first round of the National Series at the You Yangs on VIC. The results started right from the word go with Coach Jenni King scoring her first win in the elite female race over ftp’s Bec Henderson. In her first ever National XC Race Becky Mates scored a solid 10th place and got her first points on the board for the season. It was a great race with Jenni and Bec establishing a early lead and Jenni getting the gap on the 3rd lap. Bec has just been easing into her training so there is a lot to come yet for sure. Becky decided to ride a steady race as the technical nature of the course did not play to her strengths and very impressive power numbers. Keep an eye out for Becky this year as there is just a heap of potential from a girl who has actually only been riding seriously for 4 months!!!

The male elite race was a humdinger and the pace was on from the get go. Ftp’s Josh Carlson was one of the early aggressors and was joined by Aiden Lefman for the early laps. Ftp’s Ben Henderson played the waiting game and looked to ride consistent and steady laps and waited until the 4th lap to make his move to join the leaders. As soon as he made contact he continued with the pressure and made the gap. He continued to win by a minute from Aiden and the Josh who had unfortunately dropped 2 x feeds during the race and this may have affected his last lap speed. Great racing and an awesome 1st and 3rd for www.ftptraining.com.

In the Under 17’s Ftp’s Jack Lavis continued his great run of form with a solid 3rd place and some very fast laps that were equal to most of the elite field, great work Jack well done mate.

In the short track today it was full gas racing again with Bec and Jenni getting 2nd and 3rd respectively. In the male elite it looked like Josh had timed his race to perfection and had managed to control the red mist in the early parts of the race to come to the front with a blistering attack with a couple of laps to go. He gapped the field and looked to have the race in the bag when he clipped his inside handle bar and allowed the big man Paul VDP to snatch the victory. Ben suffered for some big early attacks and had to settle with 4th.

All in all a fantastic weekend of riding by the crew and a great start to the National campaign.

NSW State MTB Championships 2010

Posted by fenner on November 2, 2010

Last weekend saw the running of the NSW State MTB Champs and www.ftptraining.com riders were there in force. In the female elite Becky Mates racing in the Torq colours for the first time smashed the field in a dominant display of riding to win the Gold Medal. In the male elite it was a hard battle between 2 www.ftptraining.com riders Josh Carlson of Roackstar Racing and Ben Henderson of Torq/Anytime Fitness. A battle royal unfolded with uber fast and consistent laps, with Ben finally gaping Josh with just over a lap to go and eventually winning by just over a minute. In the under 17 men Jack Lavis dominated with very fast lap times that would have seen him right up there in any of the categories to bring home the State Champs. Well done guys a great weekend of racing and a good sign of things to come in the last few months of 2010 and into 2011.

As the local A Grade road race champion from 2009 I thought it best to try and defend my title and lined up with 20 or so riders for the Club Champs over the 110km MR92 course in Nowra. A great race unfolded with a determined effort by Rob Rix who broke away early with another rider for over 75km only to be reeled in towards the end. Damo Mason put up a great fight and we bridged the gap with about 25km to go. I took a flier with 15km to go and managed to solo away for the win. With the ride there and back home it ended up a 160km+ day for me and great prep for the upcoming Highland Fling 100 miler.
